Glass Lizards - Unique Creatures

Hello and welcome to my new blog post.  I will be posting outlines for various topics for public reference.  This blog space will also show the processes on how these outlines were designed.    Feel free to use these outlines for your own projects if you want.  For today, I will showcase a very basic outline on lizards.

One final note before I begin. Feel free to comment, rate, or subscribe to my blog. Thanks.

Topic: Lizards
Specified Topic: Glass Lizard

Brainstorm:
-It is part of the lizard family (scientific)
-Habitat?
-Food?
-Physical Features or Characteristics?
-Scientific Name?
-Use in Industry or Community?

Research:

+ “Any lizard of the genus Ophisaurus in the family Anguidae” (Scientific Name) - Encyclopedia Britannica
+ “tail is easily broken off” (Characteristic) - Encyclopedia Britannica
+ “Eastern glass lizard, Ophisaurus ventralis, occurs in southeastern North America and grows to about 105 cm (41 inches)” (Characteristic) - Encyclopedia Britannica
+ “head and body account for only 30 to 35 percent of its total length” (Characteristic) - Encyclopedia Britannica
+ “no legs…distinguished from a snake by its ears, movable eyelids, nonexpandable jaws, and … scales on the lower and upper sides of the body are of equal size” (Characteristic) - Encyclopedia Britannica
+ “slender glass lizard, O. attenuatus, …in southeastern North America northwestward into the upper Mississippi River valley” - (Location & Type) - Encyclopedia Britannica
+ “O. ventralis,… has a broad band along each lower side; O. attenuatus has narrow dark lines.” (Characteristic) - Encyclopedia Britannica
+ “live in loose soil, among leaves and grass, or under roots or stones” (Habitat) - Encyclopedia Britannica
+ “glass lizards are egg layers that produce modest clutches of 5–15 eggs. Each clutch is often attended by a female” - (Reproduction) - Encyclopedia Britannica
+ “Glass lizards principally inhabit grassland or open forest environments and eat a large variety of invertebrates.” (Habitat & Food) - Encyclopedia Britannica
+ “found in both Eurasia and the Americas, and six species are found in North America, from Virginia and southern Wisconsin to Texas and northeastern Mexico” (Habitat) - Encarta 2008
+ “Additionally, eastern glass lizards are very common in coastal dune habitats and are sometimes even found beneath debris at the tide line.” (Habitat) - Savannah River Ecology Laboratory
+ “found in a variety of habitats they are most common in flatwoods and around wetlands in sandy habitats” (Habitat) - Savannah River Ecology Laboratory
+ “eat a wide variety of insects, spiders, and other invertebrates as well as small reptiles and probably young rodents” (Food) - Savannah River Ecology Laboratory

Basic Outline:

I. Introduction
            A. Introductory Statement(s):
                        1. Lizards have lived on the earth for many years.
                        2. They have adapted based on their environment.
                        3. Nowadays, each type has special characteristics.
                        4. We will focus on the glass lizard.
B. Thesis: Glass Lizards have evolved to their specific environment in many ways.
C. Main Ideas:
1. Characteristics
2. Habitat
3. Prey
II. Characteristics
            A. Their tails are very easy to break.
B. The Eastern Glass Lizard (Ophisaurus Ventralis) expand up to 41 inches (105 cm)  in length.
            C. Thirty to thirty-five percent of their size is made up of their head and body.
D. Even though this reptile has no legs, it can be discerned from a snake due to its ears, flexible eyelids, non-elastic jaws, that the scales located on the lower and upper portions of its body have equal size.
E. It is part of the genus Ophisaurus and in the family of Anguidae
F. Some Types of Glass Lizards
            1. Eastern Glass Lizard (Ophisaurus Ventralis)
2. Slender Glass Lizard (O. Attenuates)
III. Habitat
A. Glass Lizards live in places where there are loose soil clumps, grass, leaves, or under thick roots and stones.
B. They are most commonly found in wet grasslands, loosely forested areas, flat-woods, and sandy wetland areas.
C. They also can be found in coastal dunes and areas where there are debris especially under the tide line.
D. Live hiding.
IV. Food & Prey
            A. These species eat a wide selection of invertebrates.
B. They include but are not limited to spiders, insects, small rodents, and in some cases other small reptiles.
C. Prey selection is kept at animals at a smaller size range.
V. Conclusion
A. Thesis Restatement: The way these lizards live are adaptations of a long cycle of modern evolution.
B. Brief Restatement Evidence and Circumstantial Information:
1. These reptiles were designed with natural adaptions to live in their environment.
                        2. Glass Lizards have no legs expanding its access to small hiding places.
                        3. They eat a varying selection of invertebrates in low-lying areas.
                        4. They are adapted to wet grasslands and loosely wooded areas.
5. These unique creatures can be seen in various parts of the U.S., Europe, and some other places that have the characteristics of their habitat
